Usually in the bass voice, the ostinato is a pattern of notes that are repeated over and over. Stravinsky used this technique to great effect layering ostinato on top of ostinato - listen to the Rite of Spring. It is a popular technique of contemporary jazz writers but care must be taken not to overuse it.
