Woodwinds can be used in clever ways in big band charts. In most cases woodwind parts are not essential to the success of the arrangement, but instead, can add a change of texture that one could not get in any other manner.

In the example below, the addition of the soprano sax and flutes provides a lighter feel and an interesting texture.

• North Rim - piccolo, flute, and soprano saxophone with alto and tenor saxophone
• Oleo - piccolo and clarinet with trumpet, tenor saxophone, and guitar
• Oleo - piccolo and flute with trumpet, baritone saxophone, and piano
