muted brass | doubling | woodwinds | flugelhorns
These are usually used in ballads or when a softer sound is needed, such as when doubling flutes or clarinets. When in the upper register, the flugelhorn can produce an edgy sound somewhat like a trumpet. Writing in the upper register can defeat the purpose of using the instrument. It sounds excellent in unison or in harmony as an extension of the trombone section. In some situations it can produce a quasi-French horn sound.
